What Are the Different Types of Concentrate?

What Are Cannabis Concentrates?

Cannabis concentrates are produced by distilling the plant down to its most desirable parts, without the extra plant matter. The result is a substance that still contains all of the cannabinoids and terpenes of cannabis but is more potent than the raw flower.

How Do People Consume Concentrates?

Traditionally, users vaporize concentrates using a glass dab rig — a device in which the user heats a nail or other small surface with a torch. Then they add the concentrate to the surface and inhale the resulting vapor.

Less traditional users opt for an e-nail or an electronic vaporizer, which is growing in popularity.

What Are the Different Types of Cannabis Concentrate?

You’ll find many types of concentrates, for users continue to find new ways to extract what they want from the cannabis plant. And they do it with or without using additional chemicals such as butane and CO2.

Here are some of the most popular types of concentrate.

Live Resin

Live resin is produced by freezing freshly harvested cannabis to a subcritical temperature at different stages throughout the extraction process. It’s usually a dark yellow color and can be manipulated easily.

Freezing buds allows manufacturers to skip the drying and curing process, which can damage the terpene profile and flavor of the cannabis.

Wax

Wax is made through an extraction process that uses butane hash oil (BHO). It has a waxy texture rather than the oiliness of some concentrates. However, it’s also sticky, which can make it difficult to handle without the right dabbing tools.

Wax often contains a high THC content and produces an intoxicating, enduring high.

Rosin

Rosin is a concentrate extracted by applying pressure and heat to dry cannabis buds, trim, kief, or hash. Therefore, it’s made without the use of solvents, such as butane. Rosin’s appearance can vary, depending on the part of the plant it’s extracted from.

Rosin is an excellent choice if you’re seeking a purer, more natural concentrate packed with flavor and potency.

Budder/Badder

Budder is one of the best-loved types of concentrate, and like wax, it’s extracted using BHO. Opaque in appearance, it has a light amber color and a soft, slightly oily texture, like butter.

Budder has a high terpene profile, and its texture makes it easy to manipulate onto a rig or into a vaporizer.

Sauce

The process to extract sauce has similar steps as other solvent-based extracts, but there are a few big differences. This is because the intention when making sauce is to allow the cannabinoids to crystallize and separate from the terpenes. Its texture and color can vary.

As terpenes and cannabinoids are present in varying amounts throughout the same batch of sauce, you can have a different experience each time you vaporize.

Hash

Hash is made from trichomes — the tiny hairs that line the surface of the cannabis flower. It can be extracted by carefully dry sifting the flower with a screen, or freezing and shaking it, so the trichomes break off. What remains, the “kief,” is then rolled and heated to create hash. Hash is golden brown and gooey.

You might opt for hash due to its extreme potency and natural production methods.
